A short drive away we encounter another wonderful Temple known as the Golden Cave Temples, a World Heritage site In Sri Lanka.

A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues..

One of the main highlights for families in this area is a Jeep Safari to Minneriya National Park, this park is famous for elephant sightseeing amongst many other flora and fauna, if you are travelling during the months of July and August you will be in for a treat known as the “Elephant Gathering”, a spectacular sight of over 1000 elephants gathering at the water holes of Minneriya to beat the heat.

One of the more unknown excursions in this area is the village tour of Dambulla, an amazing 2 hour experience into the village life of the people.

Starting with a very bumpy ride on cart pulled by trained bulls (Bullock Cart) through a sleepy village where time slows down and through a sweeping emerald paddy fields, you are then swiftly taken to a lake where a catamaran awaits to take you on a boat ride on the lakes, be prepared as the calm cool breezes and gentle rocking of the boat will surely put one in state of sleep.

Upon completion of this catamaran ride you will be guided though a jungle like maze to a mud hut where you will be greeted by the old ladies of the house who prepare you an amazing meal of Pol Roti and Coconut Sambal, you will be fed until you say you have enough, once done they will hand you an Herbal Tea to wash down your meal, this tea is known to clean your bowels.

Once again you will be whisked off via a tuk tuk to be welcomed by with opened arms by a family who will prepare you one of the most amazing local meal you will probably have on your tour.

End your day at one of the many amazing hotels and villas to be offered in Dambulla and Sigiriya, and be pampered by the hospitality of Sri Lanka, all while you soak up one of the many spectacular pink skies at dusk (Ideally by the pool for a more serene setting).
